Salt Lake City – Music Director Sterling Poulson, will lead the Choral Arts Society of Utah Master Chorale in Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium and many other great a cappella selections spanning centuries of choral music. Vaden Thurgood, a Utah tenor will be our featured guest soloist. The performance will be in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake on April 9th, at 8:00 p.m.
The concert opens with the well-known English folk tune Early one Morning, followed by music of Sir Edward Elgar. Reverend Michael J. Imperiale, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church then takes the program into the religious realm with Ave Maria, arranged by Nathanial Dett, and another popular Elgar piece, Ave Verum.
The chant, Ubi Caritas, is probably Italian, and dates from around the 9th-10th century. It is frequently used to accompany the foot washing on Holy Thursday. This arrangement by Maurice Duruflé has been sung in cathedrals across the globe. Other selections include Gloria, by local composer Donny Gilbert and of course the world-famous O Magnum Mysterium. Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943) is a longtime faculty member at the University of Southern California, and he wrote O Magnum Mysterium in 1994 for the Los Angeles Master Chorale. This music has become a kind of greatest hit for Lauridsen, performed by choirs all over the world in the decade since its birth-a surprisingly big splash for a piece that Lauridsen calls "a quiet song of profound inner joy." The program closes with rousing spiritual selections by William Dawson.
